SELFIE à la carte

Students who can’t participate in the full program may register for individual modules. Pricing and approximate schedules are listed below. This is a good option for students who have scheduling conflicts with a significant part of the program, or who are not interested in certain modules (e.g. not ready for the sex education class, or unable to travel to Alaska).

If you are interested in the full program, but your only concern is cost, please say so in your application and ask for financial aid. We prefer students who are able to participate in as much of the program as possible, regardless of their ability to pay. Unlike other Rise Out classes, you do not need to be low-income to qualify for financial aid for SELFIE. Of course we do ask families to act with integrity; if you have the means to pay the full fee, we ask that you do so. Rise Out is a nonprofit organization, not a business. Once we have met the costs of the program, we will re-distribute all remaining funds in the form of scholarships.

Schedule and Cost Breakdown

  • $150 one-time flat fee for registration with any/all classes: This covers the welcome package, the online yoga class, access to the book club and movie nights, and other assorted discounts ($300+ value). It also helps us pay our guest speaker fees.

  • "Everything I Know about Bodies, I Learned on the Internet" (Sex Education + Digital Literacy): Tuesday afternoons 4:00-5:00 EST September 5 - June 25 [December free] (36 sessions). $1,200

  • “Being Me” (Mental Health): Thursdays 11:30-12:30 EST September 7 - February 8 [December free] (~14 sessions). $525

  • “Fueled Up” (Fitness and Nutrition): Thursdays 12:30-1:30 EST September 7 - early November (~8 sessions). $300

  • “Future Shock!” (College Planning): Thursdays 12:30-1:30 mid-November - February 8 [December free] (~12 sessions). $275 — Students who enroll in this module must enroll in at least one other module.

  • “Your Professor Wants This Submitted in Helvetica” (Academic Skills): Thursdays 11:30-1:30 EST February 22 - May 9 (~24 sessions). $750

  • “Adulting 101” (Life Skills): Thursdays 11:30-1:30 EST May 23 - June 27 (~12 sessions). $300 — Students who enroll in this module must enroll in at least one other module.

  • “Alaska Adventure”: June or July, 2024. $500 — Students who enroll in this module must enroll in at least one other module.

  • “Thursdays Only” Package: Everything but sex ed and the Alaska trip. $1,050 for Terms 1-3 (September - February); $1,050 for Terms 4-6 (February - June) + the one-time registration fee listed above (i.e. $150 whether you register for one or two semesters).

NOTE: Separating the Tuesday class and the Alaska trip from the rest of the program is easy. Separating the Thursday classes is harder, because instructors are working together, themes overlap, and guest speakers are threaded throughout the program on days that might not map perfectly to the scheduled module. If you have Thursday availability, we’d prefer you choose the “Thursdays Only” option and ask for financial aid if necessary, rather than cobbling together some-but-not-all of the Thursday classes. The latter involves extra scheduling and administrative work on our end, which is time and energy we’d prefer to put into teaching! Doing it this way also helps build a stable cohort of students.

But if you’re only interested in one or two class modules, registering for them individually is also fine. In that case please be aware there may be small shifts in scheduling. For example, if a guest speaker on college planning can only meet during the time when the fitness class meets, the fitness class will be pushed back one week. Instructors will also occasionally fill in for each other, which might cause slight disruptions in the schedules posted here.

It is fine (and expected!) that students might have to miss an occasional session due to illness, pre-existing commitments, or other conflicts. But we do not pro-rate fees based on student absences, even if they are anticipated in advance. Specifically, in the case of the Sex Ed + Digital Literacy class, students must begin in September and commit to the full year. New students can’t jump into that class in the spring.

Likewise, we will not accept students who are only interested in the Alaska trip without participating in any of the other SELFIE modules. If you are interested in teen programs in Alaska unaffiliated with SELFIE or Rise Out, we can put you in touch with Alyssa for more information.

To Apply

Fill out the parent and student applications. At the end of the parent application, there is a space to check the modules you are interested in, and additional space to describe any special circumstances, including requests for financial aid.
